US Seeks Extradition of Arrested Huawei Executive

Canadian ambassador to the US David MacNaughton said this week that the US is seeking to formally extradite top Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou, a move that is likely to increase tensions with China.

Meng, who is also the daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, was arrested in Canada over allegations of violating US trade sanctions on Iran. She was released on bail last month and is due in court in Vancouver on February 6.

Neither the Chinese telecommunications giant nor the Canadian Justice Department had any comment on the matter. However, since Canada is one of over 100 countries with which the United States has extradition treaties, it will have to determine within 30 days if there is sufficient grounds for extradition, after which Canada’s Minister of Justice must give the final order.
