Tencent-owned WeChat has reportedly promised to clear its platform of content from self-media deemed ‘undesirable’ by the government to maintain a ‘healthy’ reading environment.
Self-media is content from Chinese social networks typically forwarded by users wanting to gain clicks and followers. WeChat said this week that starting November 12, it increased its efforts to boost content and qualification auditing to actively go after self-media that has negatively impacted content ecology and user reading experience.
The banned content includes harmful political information, pornography and other vulgar content, click-bait headlines, plagiarisms, and those with copyright infringements.
