Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt said in an investor event this week that the internet will likely be split into two, with one part led by China.

Schmidt said that he recently witnessed the phenomenal scale of companies, services and wealth being built in China, and that the country’s internet is a greater percentage of its GDP compared to the US’s. He added that It is likely that the country’s Belt and Road Initiative will compel its 60 or more partner countries to take on Chinese infrastructure even with some loss of freedom.

It was also recently reported that Schmidt’s successor, Sundar Pichai, had revealed that Google is currently exploring its options in China and may launch a censored version of its search engine in the country.
