Germany to Keep Google, Facebook’s Dominance in Check

Germany’s economy Minister Peter Altmaier said last Tuesday that the government will be seeking a right balance between the growth chances of German and European platforms and preventing the abuse of market power.

In line with Chancellor Angela Merkel’s pledge to curb the dominance of US internet companies, Altmaier said that his goal would be to make the country’s competition laws more effective, and urged the government to grant more powers to the German competition watchdog so that it can act before the companies become monopolies.

Some of the measures may reportedly include cracking down attempts by platform companies to require their business partners to work exclusively with them, but not with any of its competitors.
