California Signs Legislation Against Election “Bots”

California signed this week legislation that will ban the use of undeclared “bots” during elections.

Bots, which are automated online accounts designed to respond to users online, can be programmed to share information based on keywords or themes.

However, experts such as Prof Ralph Schroeder from the Oxford Internet Institute said that the rule could be difficult to enforce since bots are hard to trace. He added that the legislation could easily turn into an arms race and may impact positive bots.
