Facebook Goes Down in Tripoli While Clashes Rage
Users in Tripoli and neighboring cities took to Twitter this Monday and reported that their access to Facebook has been blocked. The outage happened while fighting between rival groups raged on in the capital of Libya.
Although there was no official statement from the government on the outage, Libyan utility LPTIC blamed it on the lack of security. The company, which owns the two state telecoms firms, said that their maintenance engineers had been unable to reach some stations which had stopped working due to a lack of power.
It was pointed out, however, that the explanation did not address the Facebook issue. Furthermore, web access in the country is controlled by state firms monitored by armed groups working with the UN-backed government.
